CTOnews.com, November 24 (Xinhua)-- password management tool NordPass has released a list of the world's most commonly used passwords in 2022, showing that users are still using well-known weak passwords.

Statistics show that the most common password in the world this year is "password", which was cracked in less than a second by hackers, as well as the second and third most common passwords, "123456" and "123456789", respectively.

NordPass compiled the list with the help of independent cyber security researchers, who analyzed a 3TB database. Among them, nearly 5 million people around the world use "password" as their password. Of the top 20 most commonly used passwords, 18 were guessed within a second.

CTOnews.com learned that Bitwarden, an open source password management company, found in a 2022 password management survey that 31 per cent of respondents in the US had experienced data breaches in the past 18 months. To avoid this problem, NordPass recommends using complex passwords of at least 12 characters, including a variety of uppercase and lowercase letters, symbols, and numbers.

In addition, users should avoid reusing the same password for multiple accounts, although this practice is common. Bitwarden found that more than 80 per cent of US users reuse passwords on the site.
