The latest foreign media reports show that Samsung display and LG display, the two major panel manufacturers, are developing panels for XR devices.

According to foreign media reports, Samsung display and LG display are currently focusing on the research and development of micro-displays for XR devices, in which Samsung shows that it is developing micro OLED and micro LED panel technology at the same time, with mass production and commercialization targets in 2024 and 2026, respectively. LG displays, which focus on micro OLED technology, have recently achieved a resolution of 3500 pixels on a .42-inch silicon-based OELD and are expected to start shipping to Apple and other companies next year.

Foreign media said in the report that micro OLED and micro LED, the combination of display and semiconductor technology, are also the two most concerned technologies in the XR display industry, depositing LED and OLED on silicon wafers instead of existing glass and plastic display substrates.

In order to achieve the high level of immersion required by XR devices, the weight of high-pixel and high-brightness displays need to be reduced. The size of micro-displays is very small, but fine processing is allowed, so it is a panel technology suitable for XR devices, especially XR devices for glasses.
