Alphabet executives recently stressed the need for the company to be more focused, reduce the cost of various projects and make the company 20 per cent more efficient. Recently, Google has also made adjustments in performance reviews. Some employees also say lower travel budgets and reduced benefits may be harbingers of a "bigger move".

In August, Snap announced 20 per cent layoffs. Earlier this month, Meta announced 13% layoffs, or about 11000 jobs. In addition, Twitter also announced 50% layoffs, or about 3700 jobs. Today, Hewlett-Packard announced up to 6000 job cuts over the next three years.

While Google's business has not been hit as hard as its peers, the potential recession, soaring inflation and rising interest rates are having a clear impact on Google. Google said last month that YouTube's advertising revenue was down from a year earlier. Google also said at the time that it would significantly reduce employee growth in the fourth quarter.

Google's new performance management system is scheduled to be implemented early next year and could pave the way for Google's human resources department to expel underperforming employees, people familiar with the matter said today. In addition, executives can use the system to avoid paying bonuses and shares to employees.

It is reported that under the new system, Google managers are required to classify 6 per cent of employees, or about 10,000 people, as "underperforming employees". Previously, the proportion was only 2%.
