CTOnews.com, August 19 (Xinhua)-- according to Indian Country Today, NASA confirmed to him that U.S. Marine Corps Colonel Nicole Aunapu Mann will become the first Native American woman to travel into space.

Nicole Aunapu Mann, from the Wailacki tribe, will serve as commander of the Crew-5 mission and will travel to the International Space Station aboard the SpaceX spacecraft on September 29, where she will live on the International Space Station for six months and work as a flight engineer for Expedition 68.

Other members of the Crew-5 mission include NASA's Josh Cassada, Japan's Koichi Wakata and Russia's Anna Kikina.

CTOnews.com learned that John Herrington, a member of the Chickasaw tribe, was the first Native American male to visit space. He went to space on the space shuttle Endeavour in 2002.

In an interview with ICT, Nicole Aunapu Mann said the trip broke down psychological barriers for Native American children who thought they could not be astronauts.
