Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
According to news in the morning of August 19, Beijing time, it is reported that recently, US federal government regulators have launched a wider investigation into whether there are problems with the self-driving technology of Tesla electric vehicles. It is reported that this investigation also listed Tesla's car camera system as the object of investigation.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released an investigation letter to Tesla on Thursday local time. NHTSA raised a series of questions about Tesla's in-car camera system, including how to use the camera to monitor whether drivers are focused.
The letter from NHTSA was sent to Eddie Gates, the "field quality director" of Tesla. One of the questions raised by the agency includes describing the role of in-car cameras in enhancing drivers' attention and interaction, and how these data can be used in in-car information systems.
NHTSA also asked Tesla to describe the engineering and safety explanations behind some specific design decisions in the autopilot technology system, including Autopilot.
NHTSA's investigation into Tesla's autopilot system began last year and is now expanding. The new questions raised this time probably indicate the specific functions and technologies of Tesla electric vehicles that NHTSA pays close attention to.
In the past many years, Tesla has used names such as Autopilot and "fully autopilot" to promote assisted driving technology, which has been complained and questioned by some people in the safety industry. With more than a dozen Tesla electric car accidents, NHTSA finally launched a safety investigation into Tesla's self-driving technology, which also means an important change in the attitude of US federal regulators towards Tesla.
Tesla did not comment on the news. Previously, the company had disbanded its media relations department.
NHTSA also raised a question for Tesla, that is, if the driver's hand is off the steering wheel for a certain period of time, the system will sound a warning, and what is the basis behind Tesla's length of departure. NHTSA also asked Tesla to provide information about the time delay before the driver continued to get off the steering wheel and the second warning.
NHTSA asked Tesla to answer all the survey questions by Sept. 19.
In addition, the California Motor vehicle Administration launched an independent investigation into Tesla about the company's marketing methods and whether it falsely promoted the Autopilot system. Tesla has proposed to defend the charges in the investigation, the DMV said on Thursday.
