L0: the driver drives fully

The wrong perception and judgment of the automatic system can be corrected by the driver at any time. L2 can be divided into different use scenarios by speed and environment, such as low-speed traffic jams on the ring road, fast driving on the highway and automatic parking by the driver in the car.

L3: be able to perform certain driving tasks and monitor the driving environment in some cases, but the driver must be prepared to regain driving control (when requested by the automated system). So at this level, the driver is still unable to sleep or have a deep rest. Because of the particularity of L3, we can see that the more meaningful deployment is to upgrade on the high-speed L2.

L4: in some environments and certain conditions, it can complete driving tasks and monitor the driving environment; at present, the deployment of L4 is mostly based on urban use, which can be fully automatic valet parking or directly combined with ride-hailing services. At this stage, within the range that autopilot can run, all driving-related tasks have nothing to do with the driver, and the perceived external responsibility lies in the autopilot system.

L5: all driving tasks that the autopilot system can accomplish under all conditions.

In addition, the released "Automation Classification of Automobile driving" refers to L1-L2 as auxiliary driving and L3-L5 as autopilot. Intuitive and detailed definition can more accurately convey the automation level of the vehicle and enhance public awareness of the automation level.
