The Indian Semiconductor Market report 2019-2026, jointly compiled by the Electronics and Semiconductors Association of India (IESA) and Counterpoint, was released recently. according to the report, the cumulative consumption of the Indian semiconductor market will reach 300 billion US dollars from 2021 to 2026, which is expected to become the second largest semiconductor consumer market in the world.

The mobile and wearable devices industry is the biggest contributor to India's semiconductor consumption in 2021, and the market growth will continue to be driven by the popularity of cheap mobile Internet and accelerated penetration of smartphones, according to Tarun Pathak, director of Counterpoint, a consultancy. The increased value share of high-performance processors, memory, sensors and other semiconductor components in end products will continue to drive market growth.

Looking forward to the medium-and long-term market outlook, Neil Shah, vice president of Counterpoint, said that communications and automobiles will become key areas of semiconductor consumption in India beyond mobile and wearable devices.

From 2021 to 2026, India's terminal electronic equipment market will achieve a compound annual growth rate of 19%. At present, most semiconductor components still rely on imports, and domestic production can only meet 9% of the demand. India's local semiconductor industry is expected to accelerate the release of its development potential under effective incentives, the report said.

Sunil G Acharya, vice president of IESA, said that the semiconductor industry will play an important role in India's economic growth, and the combination of demographic dividend and the influx of foreign investment will change the face of India's semiconductor industry in the next few years.

Shivani Parashar, an analyst at Counterpoint, said that India should focus on developing the ecology of the integrated circuit design industry to lay a solid application foundation for chip manufacturing. The industrial policy is expected to promote the local self-sufficiency rate of semiconductors in India to 17% in 2026, and the size of the local industry will increase by about 6 times.
