CTOnews.com August 18 news, NASA UFO investigation is not taken lightly.

In June, NASA announced it would conduct a scientific study of UFOs, or, as they were recently renamed, UAPs (unidentified aerial phenomena).

NASA said at the time that the primary goals were to identify and characterize existing UFO data, develop the best methods for collecting future observations, and determine how the agency could use the data to advance our understanding of these puzzling sky sights.

CTOnews.com understands that the research will be led by astrophysicist David Spergel, owner of the Simons Foundation in New York City. The project is expected to cost no more than $100,000 and last about nine months, starting this fall.

NASA officials said Wednesday at a "town hall meeting" where agencies discussed various Science Mission Directorate (SMD) projects.

"We're putting all our efforts into preparing for the UAP study," Daniel Evans, SMD's assistant deputy assistant administrator for research, said at Wednesday's meeting."It's really important to us, and we're making it a high priority. "

Evans added that the research team will consist of 15 to 17 people. These people will be "some of the world's leading scientists, data practitioners, artificial intelligence practitioners, aerospace security experts, all of whom have a specific mandate to show us how to apply the full focus of science and data to UAP," he said.

Evans and his team have identified the best candidates for the team and plan to lead them in research after the meeting, led by NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.

Evans said of the appointments:"I hope we can get it done by October""But I would cross my fingers and say we can get it done faster. "

NASA officials said they hope the study will help bring UAP research into the mainstream of rigorous, objective science.

Evans said:"NASA is really in a unique position to solve the UAP problem because we know how to use the tools of science and data to discern what might happen in the sky.""And, frankly, no other agency has the public's trust like us. "
