CTOnews.com, August 18 (Xinhua)-- Nokia recently signed a five-year 5G contract with AST SpaceMobile to build the world's first space-based mobile network with access to standard 4G / 5G mobile terminal devices, expanding communication coverage and removing connection barriers, Nokia announced.

Recently, Nokia announced the signing of a five-year 5G contract with AST SpaceMobile. The company is building the world's first and only space-based mobile network with access to standard 4G or 5G mobile terminals. Under the contract, Nokia and AST SpaceMobile will strive to achieve a common goal of expanding global coverage and connecting areas around the world where communications services are lacking. AST SpaceMobile's BlueWalker 3 test satellite will be launched at the end of this year, when it will begin global testing with mobile network operators on six continents.

AST SpaceMobile aims to remove connectivity barriers for more than 5 billion mobile users worldwide and to cover about half of the world's unconnected subscribers. This means that users outside the coverage of the cellular network can roam from the land network to the space network for the first time without using specialized hardware. AST SpaceMobile has reached cooperation agreements with mobile network operators that serve more than 1.8 billion mobile phone users.

Nokia AirScale Single RAN devices will help AST SpaceMobile provide mobile services to existing and potential users in areas where communication is lacking on the ground, including connecting devices on land, sea or in flight around the world. CTOnews.com has been informed that Nokia will offer a comprehensive, energy-efficient AirScale portfolio, including AirScale base stations equipped with the latest generation of ReefShark chipsets. Based on Nokia's modular baseband card, AST SpaceMobile can expand capacity, flexibility and efficiency where necessary. Nokia will also provide NetAct solutions for network management and seamless operation, as well as technical optimization and support services.

AST SpaceMobile plans to test the BlueWalker 3 satellite in Cape Canaveral, Florida, in mid-early September. BlueWalker 3 is a low-Earth orbit satellite with an aperture of about 64 square meters and is designed to connect directly to cellular equipment through the 3GPP standard. The ultimate goal of AST SpaceMobile is to deploy about 100 satellites to achieve large-scale global mobile coverage.
