According to a new report from Jibang Consulting, although the new car market is still in the shadow of supply chain shortages and epidemics in the second quarter of 2022, new energy vehicles (including pure electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles and fuel cell vehicles) still outperform traditional oil vehicles and maintain positive growth, according to a new report from Jibang Consulting.

Data show that total sales of new energy vehicles reached 2.192 million, an increase of 53.5% over the same period last year. Pure electric vehicles (BEV) sold 1.608 million units, up 64.9% from the same period last year, while plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) sold 580000 units, up 29% from a year earlier.

Although Tesla remains at the top of the BEV brand rankings, his market share has fallen sharply, with the company's market share falling from 20.1% in the first quarter of 22 to a new low of 15.9% in the second quarter. As the epidemic led to the capacity loss of Tesla's Shanghai plant in April, and Tesla's Berlin plant's Texas plant has not yet started mass production, capacity allocation has become a headache for Tesla. At present, in addition to vigorously increasing the mass production capacity of the new plant, Tesla also upgraded the Shanghai plant in July to increase capacity.

Jibang Consulting believes that as traditional car companies close the gap with Tesla in accelerating the launch of new cars, increasing the types of models, strengthening factory manufacturing capacity, accelerating the iteration of assisted driving systems, and so on, it is becoming more and more difficult for Tesla to regain more market share.

BYD, which ranks second, offers a wide choice of models, with its global market share rising to 11.2% from 9.3% in the first quarter of 2022. With its huge market advantage, Chinese brands occupied six of the top 10 in the second quarter. Hyundai and Kia are the main brands in the top 10 that do not rely on China as the most important market. The main markets for their BEV are South Korea, Europe and North America. It is worth mentioning that luxury carmakers BMW and Mercedes-Benz climbed to 12th and 14th respectively after accelerating their transition to pure electric vehicles.

In terms of PHEV, BYD 2Q22 ranks first with sales of 173000 vehicles, with a market share of 29.8%. In addition, in addition to ideal, another carmaker specializing in plug-in hybrids, the top 10 include Mingjue (acquired by SAIC) and Lecker (Geely's joint venture with Volvo).

On the contrary, plug-in hybrid vehicles in the European market showed negative annual growth for two consecutive quarters, curbing the growth of European brands. PHEV is a hybrid vehicle, which still emits carbon during use, but it is considered to be a good alternative to reduce the carbon emissions of large and high-emission vehicles. Jeep, owned by Stellantis, remained in the top 10 for four consecutive quarters after fully turning to PHEV electric vehicle technology.

Jibang Consulting expects the growth trend of new energy vehicles to remain unchanged and the overall sales forecast to remain optimistic. It is estimated that the penetration rate of new energy vehicles in the whole automobile market will reach 13% in 2022.
