Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, August 17 (Xinhua) according to data released by market research firm StorageNewsletter, global shipments of mechanical hard drives reached 44.65 million in the second quarter of this year, down as much as 15.4% from the previous month.

For comparison, in 2010, hard drive shipments peaked at 651 million units, compared with an average of 162 million units per quarter that year.

According to reports, Seagate Q2 shipped 19.88 million yuan, with a share of 44.5%; Western Digital shipped 16.48 million yuan, with a share of 36.9%; and Toshiba shipped 8.29 million yuan, with a share of only 18.6%.

CTOnews.com has reported that the latest data from Trendfocus show that shipments of mechanical hard drives (HDD) fell 45% year-on-year to 45 million units in the second quarter of 2022, a far cry from the 2010 average peak of 162 million units per quarter, mainly due to weaker customer demand.

Enterprise hard drives remain relatively stable, with slightly less demand compared to the same period last year. But this is a market that has been growing for many years and will certainly continue to grow because cloud computing and high-performance computing environments require cheap, low-power, high-density storage.

The biggest drop was in 2.5-inch mechanical hard drives, which fell 40% on a quarter-on-quarter basis (QoQ) and shipped about 11 million units. The decline in shipments is due to the weak retail sector and the weak PC market, which has largely shifted to flash-based storage solutions. Total shipments of 3.5in desktop / consumer electronics hard drives ranked second, with shipments falling by 30 per cent, to about 13 million, due to weakness in the monitoring, PC and retail markets.
