ACM"Gordon Bell" Award is the highest academic award in the field of high-performance computing applications. It is mainly awarded to the most outstanding achievements in the field of high-performance applications. It is usually won by the application of the top-ranked computer system in that year. The winner can receive a prize of 10000 US dollars (about 67900 yuan).

According to the shortlist, a total of six applications were shortlisted, and Qingcai Jiang of the University of Science and Technology of China entered the finals with "2.5 million-atom ab initio electronic-structure simulation of complex metallic heterostructures with DGDFT."

CTOnews.com learned that the application of China's Shenwei·Taihu Light Supercomputing has won the "Gordon Bell" Award for many times before. In 2016, the "Ten Million Nuclear Scalable Global Atmospheric Dynamics Full Implicit Simulation" award was awarded for the full-machine application based on the "Shenwei·Taihu Light" system. In 2017, the "Nonlinear Large Earthquake Simulation" award was awarded for the full-machine application based on the "Shenwei·Taihu Light" system.

In addition, the Shenwei Quantum Simulator (SWQSIM) jointly developed by Wuxi Center for National Supercomputing, Zhijiang Laboratory, Tsinghua University and Shanghai Quantum Science Research Center won the ACM"Gordon Bell" Award in 2021.

In the latest ranking of the world's top 500 supercomputers, Sunway TaihuLight ranked sixth with 93.1 petaflops, first place being won by the newly launched Frontier supercomputer from Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Other finalists of the 2022 ACM Gordon Bell Award use supercomputers including Frontier, Perlmutter, Summit in the United States, and Fuyue in Japan. SC22 will be held in Dallas, USA from November 13 to 18. We can look forward to the final results.
