WGR612 WDS wireless relay function detailed explanation!
A user uses a wireless router in a two-story villa. The router is on the first floor. Some rooms upstairs have weak signal.
A user wants to share broadband with his neighbor across the door, but there are many obstacles in the middle that make it difficult to wire, and the wireless network connecting his neighbor with his laptop frequently drops.
The office and warehouse of a company are located in two buildings respectively, with windows on both sides facing each other. When the wireless router is placed in the office, the warehouse signal is weak.

What is WDS?
WDS(Wireless Distribution System)
WDS can transmit data from a wired network through a relay infrastructure in a wireless network, thereby transmitting data to another wireless network environment or to another wired network. Because virtual lines are formed through wireless networks, it is often referred to as a wireless bridging function. The simplest way to put it: WDS allows wireless devices to bridge (relay) wirelessly, and at the same time has coverage functions.
The following figure shows the WDS architecture bridged by two wireless devices, which is widely used and can solve the problems listed at the beginning of this article:
Wireless route A supporting WDS function connects to the Internet, providing wired and wireless access for several desktops and notebooks; at the same time, point-to-point wireless bridging between A and B. Route B provides wired and wireless access for multiple computers simultaneously, so that all computers share broadband Internet access within the same local area network.

Another architecture is a point-to-multipoint wireless bridge between multiple wireless devices. In the figure below, A is the center and bridges with four wireless devices B, C, D, and E. This architecture is widely used in office buildings, campuses, hotels and other commercial areas. NETGEAR enterprise-class wireless APs such as WG102 and WG302 are recommended for such environments.

How to configure WDS function of wireless router?
Here, we first emphasize the following points:
1. For bridging wireless devices, the same wireless channel needs to be selected; if the wireless channel of the device is auto by default, it must be modified to 1, 6, 11, etc. to enable the bridging function;
2. Wireless devices that perform bridging need to choose the same wireless encryption method and the same key;
3. At present, NETGEAR wireless routers only support WEP as an encryption method when performing WDS;
? 4. If you want to realize roaming of wireless clients between devices, please set all bridging wireless devices to the same SSID.
NETGEAR's latest "Little White" WGR612 supports WDS function. The following takes WGR612 and WG602 v4 as examples to illustrate the configuration process of WDS function.
WGR612: IP address 192.168.1.1, MAC address 00:22:3F:8E:4D:02
WG602v4: IP address 192.168.0.227, MAC address 00:30: AB:D2:11:75

As shown in the topology diagram above, WGR612 bridges WG602 v4 and also connects to the Internet. Therefore, it can only select Wireless Base Station mode and fill in the MAC address of WG602 v4:

The red box in the figure indicates the option "Disable wireless client association." After checking this item, WGR612 will not allow wireless client connection, that is, wireless coverage will not be performed while bridging. As envisioned in the topology diagram, there will be a laptop wirelessly connected to WGR612, so this option cannot be checked.
The default IP address of WG602 v4 is 192.168.0.227. For convenience of management, turn off DHCP Client function and modify it to the address of the same segment as WGR612, for example, 192.168.1.100:

Tests for bridging:
Under normal circumstances, after setting up according to the above steps, the computer can obtain the IP address assigned by WGR612 after connecting to WG602 v4, and open the webpage normally to prove that the wireless bridge has been successfully established. There are also more intuitive ways to verify that bridging is successful.
Connect a computer wired to a LAN port on Route B to see if it can access the administration interface on Route A. If accessible, the surface bridge succeeds. If you cannot access, please follow the above steps to check, mainly check whether the parameters such as region, mode and channel in the wireless settings are consistent.
[Note] Two WGR612 can also realize WDS function, and the settings are similar to those mentioned above. For a router that needs to be connected to broadband, select "central base station mode"; for a remote router that does not need to be connected to broadband, select "wireless relay mode" and assign it a fixed IP address for management.
Application Advantages of Wireless Distributed System (WDS)
WDS can support wireless devices to work in point-to-point, point-to-multipoint, relay application mode, while providing wireless coverage. That is, it works in two modes at the same time: bridge mode +AP mode.
It changes the original single, simple wireless application model. For example, when large hot spots and enterprise users choose wireless WDS technology solutions, they can connect each AP through various optional wireless applications, which greatly improves the flexibility and convenience of the entire network structure. Especially worth mentioning is: enabling wireless network users to purchase the least wireless equipment, to achieve more functional implementation.
When WDS was first put into use, it was mostly used in a wide range of public areas, such as campuses, hospitals, hotels, warehouses, clubs, etc. With the increasing popularity of wireless network applications, this function is no longer out of reach, as the so-called, old Wang Xie Tang Qian Yan, fly into ordinary people's homes.
Wireless router with WDS function, adapt to market development, meet more needs of users, will have a broader application prospects.
