Beijing, August 17 (Xinhua) the British Office of Communications conducted a survey on people's habit of watching electronic screens and found that young people spend almost seven times as much time watching electronic screens as the elderly, and about 1/5 of households are using streaming services. and 1/3 adults are watching short videos.

According to the report, people between the ages of 16 and 24 spend only 53 minutes a day watching TV, while people aged 65 and over spend an average of nearly six hours a day. At the same time, young people today spend almost seven times more time watching electronic screens than people over the age of 65.

The "generation gap" of this viewing habit is wider than ever before, due to the use of TV alternatives such as streaming services and short videos. The director of Ofcom's market intelligence unit said: "the streaming revolution is widening the electronic screen generation gap, and there is a clear difference between the viewing habits of the young and the elderly."

Subscription to streaming services currently, about 1/5 of British households have access to the three largest streaming services-Netflix, Disney + and Amazon Prime-at a cost of about £300 (2464 yuan) per household per year.

In addition, the number of households subscribing to at least one streaming service decreased by 350000 compared with 2021, due to the increased cost of living by subscribing to these services. A survey of unsubscribers found that 3/4 said they would renew their subscriptions when their family budgets improve.

Online short video viewing in 2021, it was reported that people spent an average of 5 hours and 40 minutes a day watching video content on all devices, accounting for almost 1/3 of the waking time of adults.

At the same time, the latest figures show that 1/3 of adults in the UK are watching short videos (videos less than 10 minutes long), 65 per cent of whom between the ages of 18 and 24 watch them every day. 93 per cent of people aged 15 to 17 watch short videos on YouTube every day, 90 per cent on Instagram and 73 per cent on TikTok.

The report also surveyed the types of short videos people watched online and found that tutorial videos, such as recipes or manual DIY, were watched the most. In addition, 32 percent of respondents said they watched videos about video games, while slightly more than half of the adults surveyed said they watched videos posted online by friends and family.
