It is reported that the importance of mobile phone hinges lies not only in the ability to fold the phone, but also in the curvature, durability and reliability of the folding screen. So far, Samsung has adopted a more traditional hinge scheme, which leaves obvious gaps when the phone is folded, allowing the phone to use flexible panels with less curvature. This traditional solution is adopted by Samsung's recently released Galaxy Z Fold4 / Flip4.

Xiaomi, Huawei and OPPO have adopted a new waterdrop hinge scheme, which allows the phone to fold and sink the bending area of the screen into the body of the phone to form a drop. The waterdrop hinge scheme can make the gap of the mobile phone smaller after folding, and consumers in the market are more satisfied with it at present.

But Samsung found in the research and development phase that the use of waterdrop hinges will allow the phone to abandon IPX8-level waterproofing and can only make life waterproof. Therefore, in order to retain IPX8 waterproof, Samsung still uses traditional hinges on the Galaxy Z Fold4 / Flip4.

CTOnews.com learned that Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 uses a self-developed micro-droplet shape rotating shaft, which gives Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 a smaller droplet radius, a shorter shaft width, and a folded machine thickness of only 11.2mm. However, there is no official introduction to the waterproof performance, so the machine is not expected to support IPX8 waterproofing.

In addition, Motorola moto razr 2022, which also uses water drop hinges, only supports domestic waterproofing, not IPX8 waterproofing.
