AI Technology Review learned that Tan Ping, head of the XR laboratory at Alibaba Dharma House, has resigned recently.

Tan Ping has been invited to serve as the chairman of the top international academic conferences on CVPR, SIGGRAPH and IROS, and is a benchmark in the field of 3D vision. Tan Ping joined Ali artificial Intelligence Laboratory as chief scientist of computer vision in September 2019 and took charge of XR Lab in 2021.

XR Lab of Dharma Institute focuses on XR glasses and Internet application technology based on the new mobile computing platform, which aims to build a virtual world that allows human beings to experience immersive experience, and achieve integration and linkage with the real physical world. It can be seen that the research direction of XR laboratory is "next generation Internet technology", while Tan Ping's main research fields are computer vision and computer graphics.

When he first joined the XR lab, Tan Ping mentioned that because he majored in technology, he hoped that his participation would strengthen the company's technical reserves and technical strength in this area. It can make good use of technology, combine with rich business scenarios, and bring valuable and beneficial products to the society.

At that time, he mentioned that he chose to develop in Ali for two reasons: Internet companies in China, including Ali, have developed very rapidly in recent years, and he does not want to miss this opportunity; and he feels that there are many businesses in the XR lab that can be combined with his own skills, giving him a broad field for development.

In the time since the establishment of XR Lab, Tan Ping has led the team to bring the following applications:

Holographic shop: scan indoor and outdoor space to establish a VR store model, and provide VR display on the mobile side. Stackable spatial information service and virtual human shopping guide

AR parallel world: through the self-developed hardware equipment to scan the indoor and outdoor space to establish a three-dimensional high-precision map, and through the camera to achieve high-precision positioning in the map, to achieve AR navigation, AR information overlay, AR clock in photos, AR virtual customer service and other capabilities. At the same time, it provides a content production platform to help enterprises easily achieve customization of all kinds of effects.

IDC intelligent operation and maintenance robot: a data room operation and maintenance robot designed to protect data security, which can realize "automatic hard disk replacement, fine inspection and automatic asset inventory", freeing the data center from relying on human duty and inspection.

At the same time, from 2019 to 2021, the XR lab team will also publish a number of papers at the top of CVPR, IROS,RAL and ICCV, mainly on 3D modeling, rendering, human-computer interaction and other fields.

Tan Ping also gave a speech on the theme of meta-universe at the 2021 Hangzhou Yunqi Conference, when his speech was entitled "Meta-Universe: the next Generation Internet." In this speech, Tan Ping introduced to the audience what meta-universe is, the technical composition of meta-universe and the relevant cases at that time, such as the holographic store built through 3D reconstruction technology, which allows customers to enjoy the immersive purchase experience, and the AR art exhibition jointly organized by XR Lab and Song gallery.

In this sharing, Tan Ping said that in essence, meta-universe is the entire Internet on AR and VR glasses, and it is a way of presenting the Internet on the new computing platform.

It is understood that Tan Ping was born in Lianyuan, Loudi in 1980. he was very good at math in high school. He often went to Changsha to participate in math competitions. In the second year of senior high school, he was admitted to the youth class of Shanghai Jiaotong University, when he was only 15 years old.

In 2000, Tan Ping graduated with a double degree in applied mathematics and computer science from Shanghai Jiaotong University. In his undergraduate study, he thinks that mathematics is partial to theory, and he hopes to do more things with practical value. At that time, Tan Ping accidentally saw the introduction of artificial intelligence major at Shanghai Jiaotong University and thought it was the direction he wanted to develop, so he embarked on the route of learning artificial intelligence. Because he has a computer foundation in his undergraduate course and uses familiar mathematical tools in artificial intelligence learning, this kind of turn is not difficult.

After graduating from his bachelor's degree, he continued to study for a master's degree at Shanghai Jiaotong University and graduated in 2003 with a master's degree in pattern recognition and intelligent systems.

After graduating with a master's degree, Tan Ping went to Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in China to pursue a doctorate degree. During his doctoral study, his mentor was Professor Quan long, who made great achievements in the field of computer vision.

Professor Quan long made outstanding contributions to laying the foundation of the basic theory of 3D reconstruction in the 1990s. Among his students are Tan Ping, Xiao Jianxiong, founder of self-driving company AutoX, Fang Tian, co-founder of Altizure CEO, Zeng Gang, professor of Peking University, Wei Yichen, director of Kuangshi Shanghai Research Institute, Wang Jingdong and Yuan Lu, senior researchers of Microsoft Research, Zhang Honghui of Dajiang, and other leaders in the field of computer vision.

Tan Ping graduated from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2007 with a doctorate in computer science and engineering. In the same year, he joined the National University of Singapore as an assistant professor in the Department of Electronics and computer Engineering.

Until 2014, Tan Ping thought that Singapore's development was relatively limited and wanted to see the wider world, so he went to Canada. During his development in Canada, he was awarded the title of tenured Associate Professor by Simon Fraser University (SFU) in Canada.

He won the MIT TR35@Singapore Award in 2012, which was won by 12 top entrepreneurs under the age of 35 from Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand, and was nominated for the PAMI Outstanding Young researcher Award in the same year.

In 2014, he won the "Discovery Accelerator (Discovery Accelerator Supplements)" award from the Canadian Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC). It is reported that NSERC awards the three-year "Discovery Accelerator" award each year to 100 researchers who have made rapid, outstanding and remarkable research progress.

Tan Ping's Google Scholar page shows that he has quoted a total of 10675 times so far, with an h index of 49.

Among his papers, the most cited paper was "Dualgan: Unsupervised dual learning for image-to-image translation (Dualgan: unsupervised dual Learning for Image-to-Image conversion)" published in 2017, with 1658 citations.

Tan Ping's main research interests are: computer vision, computer graphics, robotics, 3D reconstruction, image-based modeling, image and video editing, lighting and reflection modeling and so on. After joining XR Lab, he focused on 3D modeling and holographic technology research and development, and devoted himself to leading the lab to build a real-world 3D digital version and create a realistic virtual world.
