According to GWN, although the global consumer electronics semiconductor market continues to fall short of expectations, the semiconductor demand for new energy vehicles and industrial races is constantly heating up, which also makes many international semiconductor contract manufacturing giants maintain a positive attitude towards the next expectations.

From the market data of Q2, according to market research firm Strategy Analytics, the Q2 semiconductor contract manufacturing market achieved double-digit revenue growth in 2022. With the exception of Intel, other fabs have grown. TSMC has achieved double-digit growth in wafer shipments, but it lags behind in pricing mature nodes. The Global Foundries wafer ASP is currently close to $3000. Both TSMC and Global Foundries reduced capital expenditure, while SMIC and UMC kept expectations.

Recently, however, according to DIGITIMES, sources pointed out that the slowdown in demand for personal computers and other consumer electronics applications has been a drag on capacity utilisation in contract manufacturers. Still, orders for automotive chips make up only a fraction of the capacity gap in the third quarter.

Sources said that in the fourth quarter of 2022, foundry factories that are unable to fill their fab capacity with more car chip orders, especially the second echelon foundry, will still see a significant decline in capacity utilization.

For front-line foundry, only 5-10% of fab capacity in the fourth quarter will be affected by weak mass market orders, sources said.
