Thank you for the invitation of China Cyber letter magazine. I am glad to share some of my thoughts on the vision of science and technology and mankind with my Chinese friends.

With the accelerated development of science and technology, one day technology may exceed human understanding and control. In this regard, some people are optimistic, others are pessimistic. But I believe that as long as we are not complacent and always maintain a sense of urgency, then driven by the power of science and technology, the future of mankind will eventually be bright. This is like a self-proving prophecy: if mankind wants to make the future better, it should take action to make the future better.

I hope to try our best to maximize the use of science and technology to help achieve a better future for mankind. To this end, any area that helps to achieve sustainable development in the future is worthy of our investment. Whether it is Tesla, brain-computer interface company, or space exploration technology company, the ultimate goal of these enterprises is to improve the quality of life of mankind in the future. to create as much practical value to the world as possible-Tesla aims to accelerate the transformation of the world to sustainable energy, brain-computer interface companies engage in medical rehabilitation, and space exploration technology companies make interstellar connectivity possible.

Clean energy: a sustainable future for clean energy, my starting point is how to produce and store energy continuously and for a long time, and how to provide continuous power for future production and life. In my opinion, the future of sustainable energy involves three links.

The generation of sustainable energy. The sun is like a huge nuclear fusion generator, from which human beings currently develop very little energy. In the long run, solar energy will become the main source of energy for human civilization. Of course, wind, hydro, geothermal and nuclear power are also useful energy supplements.

Sustainable energy storage. In view of the change of day and night and the cloudy and sunny weather, we need many fixed battery packs to store solar and wind energy, because the sun will not shine all the time, the strong wind will not blow all the time, and invisible energy needs to be sealed in a large number of fixed battery packs.

Electric transportation. Vehicles, including cars, aircraft and ships, are fully electrified. Electric rockets may be difficult, but we may be able to use sustainable energy to make the propellants used in rockets. Eventually, the world economy will be run entirely by sustainable energy.

The world is moving towards the track of sustainable energy transformation, and mankind should continue to accelerate this process. Because the faster this transformation is achieved, the less risks humans pose to the environment and the more gains they will gain. When the supply of clean energy continues, the costs of carbon sequestration and desalination will be cheaper, and the problems of climate change and water shortages will be solved; when fossil fuels withdraw from the stage of history, the sky will become cleaner, the world will be quieter, the air will be cleaner and the future will be brighter.

Solar energy, battery packs and electric cars outline a bright future. Next we need to focus on dealing with the limiting factors. The development of automobile electrification has become the consensus of all countries, but the global popularity of pure electric vehicles needs battery support on the scale of TWh. According to our estimates, humans need about 300 terawatt-hour batteries to store energy in order to achieve sustainable energy transformation. The biggest difficulty in promoting sustainable energy lies in the large-scale production of lithium battery cells. Specifically, from mining, element extraction to the production line under the battery cell, and finally the formation of the battery pack, need to go through many complex links. It can be said that the production of battery cells restricts the rapid development of sustainable energy economy.

As a pioneer and innovator focusing on energy innovation technology, Tesla was established to solve the problem of energy innovation. On the one hand, we build comprehensive sustainable energy products from energy production, storage to use; on the other hand, we are committed to redefining battery manufacturing and removing restrictions on battery capacity through innovative research and development of advanced battery technology. I believe that the world will transition to a sustainable future through a combination of solar, wind and battery storage and electric vehicles. I am glad to see more and more enterprises join this field. In the cause of energy innovation, Chinese enterprises will be a force that cannot be ignored.

Humanoid robots: do what humans do. Today's cars are becoming more and more like intelligent networked robots on wheels. In fact, besides cars, humanoid robots are also becoming a reality. Tesla launched a general-purpose humanoid robot (Tesla Bot) in 2021. Tesla robot is close to an adult in height and weight, can carry heavy objects or carry heavy objects by hand, and can walk quickly in small steps. The screen on its face is an interactive interface for communicating with people. You may wonder, why are we designing this robot with legs? Because human society is based on the interaction of bipedal humanoids with two arms and ten fingers. Therefore, if we want a robot to adapt to the environment and do what humans do, it must have roughly the same size, shape and ability as humans.

The initial positioning of Tesla robot is to replace people to do repetitive, boring and dangerous work. But the long-term goal is to make it serve thousands of families, such as cooking, mowing lawns, taking care of the elderly and so on.

To achieve this goal, robots need to evolve smart enough and have the ability to produce robots on a large scale. Our "four-wheeled robot"-cars, has changed people's travel and even their way of life. When one day we have solved the problem of self-driving of cars (that is, the problem of artificial intelligence in the real world), we can extend artificial intelligence technology to humanoid robots, which will have a broader application prospect than cars.

We plan to launch the first prototype of a humanoid robot this year, and strive to improve the intelligence of the robot and solve the problem of large-scale production. Since then, with the expansion of production scale and the decline of cost, the practicability of humanoid robot will be improved year by year. In the future, a home robot may be cheaper than a car. Maybe in less than ten years, people will be able to buy their parents a robot as a birthday present.

It can be predicted that with the power of robots, we will create an era in which goods and services are extremely abundant, and everyone can live a rich life. Perhaps the only scarcity that exists in the future is for us to create ourselves as human beings.

Brain-computer interface: empowering the disabled compared to electric cars, perhaps some Chinese friends are not so familiar with brain-computer interface companies. Such companies are mainly engaged in the development of computer and human brain fusion technology, and their brain chips are the size of coins and wearable devices such as smartphones, but they can integrate more deeply with the user's body-recording and stimulating brain activity by implanting the cerebral cortex.

At this stage, this technology is helping the injured at the individual level. We received a lot of regrettable e-mails: a 25-year-old man had an accident on a motorcycle in the prime of his life, resulting in being unable to eat on his own, which is a great grief for both individuals and families. In view of this, brain-computer interface technology will focus on curing or alleviating related diseases such as brain injury for many years to come. For example, it can help people with spinal injuries and mental diseases restore physical sensation or motor function, or make it easy for tetraplegic patients to use their brains to operate computers or cell phones.

The technology could also improve a wider range of brain damage problems, whether they are congenital or accidental, or caused by age and external stress factors, including severe depression. morbid obesity, sleep problems and potential schizophrenia are all expected to be alleviated by man-machine equipment.

With the development of brain-computer interface technology, in the long run, this connection is expected to expand the channels of communication between the outside world and the human brain, "access" more brain regions and new neural data. This technology can effectively integrate human beings with artificial intelligence, and eventually expand the new ways in which human beings interact with the world, themselves and others. Even if the goal of man-machine integration is difficult to achieve, brain-computer interface technology will play a great value in the field of medical rehabilitation.

Space exploration: the possibility of interplanetary inhabitation finally, my best hope is that humans will create a self-sufficient city on Mars. Many people ask me why I want to explore outer space and turn human beings into multi-planetary creatures. In the vast universe, human civilization is like a faint candle, like a glimmer in the void. When one day, the expansion of the sun makes the earth unlivable, we can fly to our new home by spaceship. If human beings can inhabit other planets, it means that human beings already have one of the conditions to pass the great screening of the universe, when we will become interstellar citizens and human civilization will continue.

The first step to achieving interplanetary habitat is to reduce travel costs, which is why SpaceX was founded-first to build recyclable rockets and then to continuously improve carrying capacity by building reusable giant spacecraft. As of the beginning of this year, SpaceX had successfully carried out 79 rocket multiplexing flights, transporting cargo to the space station and sending ordinary people into space. We have also designed and built the largest carrier rocket in history, the Starship, which can carry 100 passengers and supplies at a time. In the future, we plan to build at least 1000 "starships" and send groups of pioneers to Mars to build a self-sufficient city.
