TerraPower, a nuclear technology start-up founded by Microsoft founder Bill Gates, announced on Monday that it has invested $750 million in the latest round of financing, mainly for the development of nuclear technology and nuclear medicine innovation.
It is reported that this round of financing by the company's chairman Gates and South Korean energy supplier SK jointly led, of which SK invested 250 million US dollars.
"whether we are using advanced zero-carbon nuclear energy to combat climate change or medical areas such as using radioisotopes to fight cancer, our team is deploying technological solutions, which has attracted the attention of investors around the world," Chris Levesque, chief executive of Tyra Energy, said in a statement.
Although the energy generated by nuclear reactors does not release greenhouse gases, the nuclear waste generated in the process will exist for a long time and must be carefully stored.
Tara Energy is working with General Electric's General Hitachi Nuclear Power Company to commercialize the Natrium project. The Natrium project includes a small reactor and a molten salt energy storage system that allows small reactors to increase their energy output in a short period of time as needed.
At present, Tara Energy is demonstrating molten salt reactor technology at a coal-fired power plant in Wyoming that is about to be shut down. This is also part of the U.S. Department of Energy Advanced reactor demonstration Program (ARDP).
Tara Energy hopes to commercialize molten salt reactor technology to provide zero-carbon energy for heavy industrial users such as sewage treatment plants and chemical treatment plants. The nuclear technology developed by the company is part of the fourth-generation nuclear power technology traveling Wave reactor (TWR), which can increase the efficiency of mining uranium by 30 times and greatly reduce the production of nuclear waste.
Tara Energy also plans to help doctors treat cancer through a radioisotope program.
A small amount of micro-radioactive material can be used to help treat some cancers, including Actinium-225, which can be used to help treat prostate cancer, lymphoma, melanoma and other cancers. Tara Energy is innovating the process of extracting thorium-229. Thorium-229 is the raw material for the manufacture of Actinium-225, and the source is uranium-233.
At present, Actinium-225 is not enough to meet the medical needs. Tara Energy said it would use a "unique approach" to extract Actinium-225 to introduce more of this radioisotope to the medical community.
