Distinguished guests of this issue,

Wu Hequan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering

This is an era of the convergence of new technologies, AI, 5G and other cutting-edge technologies are accelerating to change our lives.

At the 2022 New Wise Conference sponsored by Weibo and Sina News, Wu Hequan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, pointed out that the application of AI is just beginning, and there is no need to worry too much about AI replacing human beings, because it is not only replacing some jobs, but also creating new ones.

For 5G, which has been commercially available for three years, Wu Hequan pointed out that the evolution of mobile network technology is endless, and 5G still needs to improve in many aspects, such as network coverage, technological evolution, application experience, and so on. As for the 6G under development, he said that we need to learn from the experience of 5G, we can not simply increase the peak speed by 1000 times, but also consider how to meet the needs of the public.

Don't worry about AI replacement. at present, AI is accelerating its landing in various industries.

However, when AI develops to a certain stage, will it replace human beings, even as in sci-fi movies, threatening human beings after awakening?

Wu Hequan believes that AI needs people to train, and it will not produce consciousness on its own. Some people worry that AI will resist humans, and it may be that humans have loopholes in the programming of AI, stimulating its opposing actions, but not consciously.

As for whether it will replace human beings, for example, many Internet companies now use AI customer service, but sometimes they have to be equipped with real people to answer, that is to say, AI can not replace all positions. In his view, AI has not only replaced some jobs, but also created some new ones. For example, the analysis of big data, which AI relies on, needs to do a lot of pre-processing in the early stage. Take face recognition as an example, the computer will not distinguish the facial features, so it is necessary to manage the photos and videos of the face manually in advance and draw the positions of eyes, nose, mouth and ears. The Chinese Ministry of people and Social Affairs named it AI trainer, and it is estimated that the number of relevant employees at home and abroad is expected to reach 5 million by 2022.

"the application space of AI is very large, and it is just beginning now. I believe that more and better jobs will be created in the future." He said.

5G commercial three years still need to strengthen coverage this year, China's 5G license issuance ushered in the third anniversary.

By May this year, domestic 5G base stations had reached 1.7 million, and it is expected to reach 2 million by the end of this year. The number of 5G mobile phone users has reached 428 million, accounting for 25.8% of mobile phone users.

Although this achievement remains in the lead in the world, Wu Hequan believes that 5G base stations still have a long-term development process. He pointed out that at present, the number of 4G base stations in China is more than 5 million, that is, 5G base stations are less than 1/3 of 4G base stations. The plan of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology is that 80% of China's administrative villages will have access to 5G by 2025, so an important direction of 5G in the future is to continue to complete coverage. For 5G users, the number of users also needs to continue to increase if the 5G network is to be effective.

In addition to network coverage, he believes that 5G technology also needs to evolve.

When 5G first went into commercial use three years ago, it was in accordance with the R15 standard. Now it has evolved to R16, and it is expected to complete R17 this year. The evolution of the standard can further develop the capabilities of 5G, such as industrial Internet applications. For example, conventional public networks focus on downlink and large bandwidth, while industrial applications, in turn, require large uplink, low latency, accurate positioning and high reliability; the future R18 standard may promote the coordinated development of 5G and satellite Internet.

"further, there may be R19, and there may be R20 in the future. In fact, when it comes to R20, it will be 6G. 5G should also be said to lay some foundation for the future 6G."

Wu Hequan stressed that the user experience of 5G also needs to be further improved. Many netizens pointed out that although 5G has high bandwidth and the speed of downloading videos or files is really fast, they do not feel the applications that cannot be experienced in the 4G era.

For example, VR / AR is also available in the 4G era, but the 4G bandwidth is insufficient and the delay is relatively large, which can be solved by 5G and cannot be done in the 4G era with 8K video. However, 5G content providers have not yet kept up with these applications, while the equipment is bulky and expensive, which limits the experience of 5G users.

"so the experience of 5G depends not only on network operators, but also on commercial content development and application scenario development." He said.

6G R & D can not only improve network speed at the same time of 5G evolution, many countries, including China, have started research on 6G. Wu Hequan said that 6G research should first start with demand, then do technical verification and standardization, and finally to industrialization, which is just beginning.

He pointed out that there are many challenges in studying 6G requirements. In previous generations of mobile communications, we generally adhere to the idea that the peak speed of the new generation is 1000 times that of the previous generation, and now the peak speed of 5G is 1Gbit / s, if the millimeter wave band can reach 20Gbit / s. "is this necessary if 6G still increases by 1000 times?" 'This is a challenge in the 6G transition,'he said.'we can't simply increase the peak rate by 1000 times, but we also have to consider how to meet the needs of the masses,'he said. 5G commercial for three years, there are still a lot of 5G user feedback experience is not enough to move them, so 6G should be more cautious.

Secondly, mobile communication needs frequency, 5G has not been easy to free up some frequencies, to 6G to find the frequency is even more difficult. It is natural to develop to a higher frequency band, and the transmission conditions of a higher frequency band are relatively poor, which means that the cost of building a network will be high, which is also a challenge.

The third challenge is technology. 'We have applied the technology we have accumulated over the years to 5G, and we don't seem to have so many reliable technologies available for 6G, so we still need to make great efforts on original innovation, 'Mr. Wu said.

He believes that the biggest difference between 6G research and previous generations of mobile communication technology is that in previous generations, we still followed a path that depended on both national independent innovation and globalization, and now we are facing a very severe international situation. Some countries want to exclude Chinese enterprises from participating in 6G standards. "this is indeed a serious challenge. How can we innovate and persist in opening up? we need to further win the support of more countries. "
