On August 15, Canalys data showed that 24.5 million smartphones were shipped in Southeast Asia in the second quarter of 2022, down 7 per cent from the first quarter.

Among them, Samsung, OPPO, Xiaomi, vivo and realme ranked the top five with a share of 23%, 18%, 16%, 12% and 11% respectively.

At the manufacturer level, demand for Samsung's mid-and high-end A-series was lower than expected, resulting in a 19% drop in second-quarter results compared with the first quarter. OPPO firmly ranked second with a market share of 18%; Xiaomi shipped 4 million units in the second quarter, unchanged from the previous quarter and ranked third; both vivo and realme were in the top five, with 3.2 million and 2.6 million respectively.

At the market level, Indonesian shipments rose to 9.1 million. Samsung leads the market with a 20% market share. Vivo strengthened its retail and online sales channels to secure second place with a 19% market share, while Xuan stepped up the promotion of the Infinix online brand, surpassing realme in the Indonesian market for the first time to rank fifth. Infinix's Hot series priced under $200 has attracted a lot of consumers.

The Philippine market shipped 4.4 million units, maintaining its position as the second largest smartphone market in Southeast Asia. Manufacturers stepped up their promotional activities in the second quarter, and shipments increased by 4% compared with the previous quarter.

Affected by the devaluation of the Thai baht, inflation and slow economic recovery, Thailand's smartphone market fell 14% month-on-month to 4 million units, while Vietnam's smartphone market shipments also fell 32% month-on-month to 3.1 million units. Malaysian smartphone market shipments rose 6% compared with the first quarter to 2.4 million units.
