According to DIGITIMES, industry insiders have revealed that Samsung has reduced the price of its 4Gb DDR4 chips, which is a strategic move for the company to further accelerate the transition of the industry from DDR3 to DDR4.

Sources said Samsung continued to reduce its DDR3 chip production while offering more cost-effective DDR4 chip prices to attract orders for applications that still need DDR3 memory, such as consumer electronics.

As Samsung cuts the price of DDR4 chips, suppliers of DDR3 memory are also likely to lower their quotations to maintain orders. Sources said that the decline in consumer DRAM prices in the second half of this year is expected to widen.

Sources pointed out that in July alone, the contract price of 4Gb DDR4 memory had fallen by about 8%, although the price cuts from major suppliers were "unreasonable" from the perspective of manufacturing costs. Consumer-grade DRAM prices are likely to fall 15 per cent in the third quarter.

In addition, while phasing out DDR3 production, Samsung and SK Hynix accelerated the transition from the old production line to the new production line and expanded their DDR5 chip production. According to industry insiders, these measures will limit the growth of its overall DRAM.
