As soon as the blockbuster news came out, it attracted a lot of attention, and many people tried to check with Tesla and BYD, but the two companies had no comment. On August 11, local time, teslamag.de reported the incident and confirmed that German-made Tesla Model Y will assemble BYD blade batteries.

According to teslamag.de, on July 1, 2022, Tesla Model Y, equipped with BYD blade batteries, passed the EU model certification, which was issued by the Netherlands RDW (Dutch Ministry of Transport). The new Model Y, known as Type 005, has a battery capacity of 55 kilowatt hours and a range of 440km, according to certification documents.

Teslamag.de said that since Tesla currently sells only the long-lasting and performance versions of Model Y in Europe, the new Model Y is a step backwards to some extent. Technically, however, the BYD blade battery is interesting because it is a "structural package" according to EU approval.

Tesla wanted to install this kind of structured battery pack on Germany's Model Y from the very beginning. The battery and chassis are integrated to form part of the vehicle's load-bearing structure, the latest 4680 battery pack, but Tesla's 4680 battery has been delayed again and again, so it was previously used with China 2170 battery. Today, Germany's Model Y will use BYD blade batteries. Compared with the 2153 kg weight of the 60 kWh Model Y applied by Tesla in the European Union last year, the weight of the new Model Y has been reduced by 66 kg to 2087 kg, and the overall energy consumption has been reduced to 155 watt hours per kilometer.

In addition, Tesla, a rear-drive model with a small battery, was also registered in the European Union and was announced last summer. The car battery supplier is Ningde Times, with a battery capacity of 60 kilowatt hours and a driving capacity of 455 kilometers.

CTOnews.com learned that the blade battery is a new lithium iron phosphate battery independently developed by BYD. Compared with the ternary lithium battery, the blade battery has the characteristics of high safety, long cycle life and low cost, the energy density can reach 180wh/kg, and the volume is nearly 50% higher than that of the previous generation BYD battery, which greatly improves the overall life span of the vehicle.
