In response to the news, senior Indian government officials said the Indian government has no plans to restrict Chinese mobile phone brands from selling low-end smartphones in the Indian market.

According to a report by the Indian "Mint" on the 11th, a person familiar with the internal affairs of the Indian government said: "the Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has not considered such a proposal."

In addition, some Indian industry insiders also expressed their views on the matter. A research executive at a consulting firm said that the implementation of the ban would disrupt the entire Indian mobile phone market and destabilize the entire ecosystem of the Indian mobile phone market. So the possibility of implementing this ban is very small. At the same time, he added that Indian brands need strong products, sales and after-sales service, which they lack at the moment.

An executive at IDG India also said that India is an "open market", the ban is difficult to implement, and if there is a ban, it will be difficult for the remaining market participants to fill the market gap.

Seigniorage also said that according to industry insiders, the relevant Indian government has realized that the Indian market share of local mobile phone brands is declining, and the Indian government is also looking for policies and support to help local mobile phone companies (Lava,Micromax, etc.) regain market share, but these local companies cannot compete with Chinese brands in terms of manufacturing scale and marketing strength.

CTOnews.com learned that smartphones under $150 accounted for 1/3 of India's sales in the second quarter to June 2022, with Chinese companies accounting for 80% of shipments, with Xiaomi, realme, OPPO and vivo in the top five.
