On Thursday, Elon Musk, chief executive of Tesla, a US electric car maker, mocked the IRS's plan to hire 87000 new employees on personal social media Twitter.

The IRS plans to use funds allocated by the inflation reduction Act (Inflation Reduction Act) to recruit more staff, which is expected to be passed by Congress in the coming days. Musk commented on personal social media that "fate likes sarcasm" and issued an emoji indicating that the United States broke with Britain in the first place over taxes.

Musk tweeted a screenshot of a British officer in the movie Patriot, with the caption: "countries that have resisted taxes have employed 87000 new IRS agents."

One Twitter user replied: "they're not just checking you, they're checking us." Musk responded: "that's right. I have acquiesced in being audited every year."

The IRS website recruitment notice for "criminal investigation special agents" mentioned that being able to "legally carry guns" was a "key requirement" for applicants, which has been deleted. Applicants must also be "willing and able to participate in arrests, search warrants and other dangerous tasks" and "willing to use lethal force," the notice said.

The recruitment will more than double the IRS's current staff size. Some people believe that the expanded IRS will increase government revenue by $124 billion over the next decade. In this way, they say, the IRS will be better able to investigate the rich and large companies.
