CTOnews.com August 12 news, according to Reuters reported today, two people familiar with the matter said that in order to help the United States compete with China, South Korean memory manufacturer SK Hynix plans to build an advanced chip packaging factory in the United States. A site for the plant will be chosen in the first half of next year, but it is unclear when construction will begin.

One of the sources, who declined to be named, said the plant was expected to cost "billions of dollars," employ about 1000 employees and be in mass production by 2025-2026. And the source said that the factory location may be near universities with engineering-related talents.

Last month, Hynix announced that it would invest $22 billion (about 148.28 billion yuan) in the United States in semiconductors, green energy and biosciences, including $15 billion (about 101.1 billion yuan) in semiconductors. Specifically, the $15 billion will be used for research and development projects, materials development, and construction of advanced packaging and testing facilities.

SK Hynix will establish a nationwide network of R & D collaborations and related facilities to package SK Hynix's own memory chips and logic chips designed by other U.S. companies for machine learning and artificial intelligence applications, the sources said.

In addition, the United States passed the Chip and Science Act this week, which will provide $52 billion in subsidies for chip manufacturing and research and about $24 billion in tax breaks for chip factories. Sources said chip packaging plants would be eligible for funding.

CTOnews.com learned that SK Hynix officially acquired South Korean foundry Key Foundry on August 2 for 575.8 billion won (about 2.977 billion yuan). SK Hynix expects the acquisition to double its current 8-inch foundry capacity.
