Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
Meta, Facebook's parent company, reportedly announced today that it will test a new secure storage feature for backing up users '"end-to-end" encrypted chat data on Messenger.
The move comes amid protests Meta provided Messenger data to police. Meta spokesman Andy Stone said the new secure storage feature had been in development for some time and the release was unrelated to the Nebraska case.
So-called "end-to-end" encryption allows only the sender and designated recipient to access the data, while no one else, hackers, or any third party can access the encrypted data on the server. Meta's new secure storage feature will allow users to back up "end-to-end" encrypted Messenger conversations so they can recover historical chats on their new device.
Meta is also inaccessible to these backup data. Users can create PIN codes, generate codes or use third-party cloud services to recover their chat messages.
Meta will launch the feature on Android and iOS devices later this week, but it won't be available on the Messenger website. In addition, Meta said it would expand testing of "end-to-end" encrypted messages on Instagram, Meta's photo-sharing social platform.
Meta said in a statement: "People want their online conversations with friends and family to be private and secure. By default using 'end-to-end' encryption on Messenger and Instagram, we are working hard to protect users 'personal messages and calls. "
In fact, Meta has been talking about fully deploying end-to-end encryption since 2016. But some critics say the security measure will make it harder for law enforcement to catch some criminals.
At the Lawful Access Summit hosted by the U.S. Department of Justice in 2019, FBI Director Christopher Wray said Facebook would become "a place where some criminals dream come true."
Meta also said in a statement today that it plans to launch default "end-to-end" encryption for personal messages and calls globally in 2023 and is making progress.
