Intel has just announced plans for On Demand, which will allow users to unlock certain features for a fee after buying a server CPU.

Intel divides some of its functions into paid purchases, which means the company can reduce its SKU lineup in the future. And future users will be able to pay for some new features without having to replace the processor. Intel describes it as a new "consumption model" where customers can combine their infrastructure with necessary services when needed.

The new plan is currently aimed at data centers, but fortunately, there are no official plans to include consumer hardware. However, Intel has tried the idea of unlocking consumer hardware at a certain cost. The plan, called Intel upgrade Service (Intel Upgrade Service), makes it possible to unlock larger cache or hyperthreading support on some low-end CPU.
