On November 23, according to foreign media reports, Ericsson said on Tuesday that it would invest millions of pounds in 6G network research in the UK and cooperate with a number of universities in hardware security, artificial intelligence, cognitive networks and quantum computing.
Ericsson said the 10-year plan will help promote the development of the next-generation 6G network, which is expected to be commercially available around 2030.
Katherine Ainley, chief executive of Ericsson UK and Ireland, said: "We will build a team of 20 experienced researchers in the UK and will also provide financial assistance to students. The initial focus will be on 6G networking and hardware security." It is reported that universities that may cooperate include the University of Surrey, the University of Bristol and the University of Manchester.
The new research team will complement Ericsson's 17 existing research sites in 12 countries, she said.
The UK government said Ericsson's investment was a "great trust" in the UK telecoms industry, adding that the UK would soon announce a strategy for the development of 6G technology.
