CTOnews.com, November 23 (Xinhua)-- Mazda recently announced its new spending plan for electric vehicles in the company's medium-term Management Plan Update. Mazda will spend 1.5 trillion yen (about 75.75 billion yuan) on car electrification by 2030, including the purchase of electric car batteries. It is reported that Mazda has reached an agreement with Vision Dynamics to ensure the supply of electric vehicle batteries and increase the production of electric vehicles in domestic factories.

CTOnews.com has learned that Mazda and many other Japanese carmakers have been slow in electrification. For its part, Mazda has sold only one electric car in the western market, the Mazda MX30.

Now that could change, with Mazda unveiling a 1.5 trillion yen electrification spending plan to produce electric cars at its headquarters in Hiroshima and export them to other countries such as the United States. The company now expects electric vehicles to account for 30 to 40 per cent of its total production by 2030, compared with a previous target of 25 per cent. Batteries are very important in electric vehicles, accounting for about 30% of the production cost of electric vehicles. Mazda, which is trying to reduce fixed costs through external procurement, expects to spend hundreds of billions of yen on battery purchases by 2030.

In order to achieve Mazda's ambitious electrification goals, the company has developed a three-stage electrification plan. First, the company will "use technical assets made up of a variety of electrification technologies to reduce its environmental footprint and produce attractive products". Second, Mazda will launch its next-generation hybrid system and the first batch of new electric vehicles in China, which will then enter other markets. Third, the company will "promote the full launch of battery electric vehicles and consider investing in battery production".

Mazda did not specify the timing of these stages, nor did it give a launch date for its first pure electric vehicles.

Mazda also outlined three other steps the company will take. The most important focus is on carbon reduction, with the ultimate goal of achieving carbon neutralization of Mazda production facilities by 2035 and complete carbon neutralization by 2050. Mazda also made it clear that it would work to reduce production costs and invest in a more "people-oriented" user interface experience, mainly through investment in psychoanalysis and artificial intelligence.
