CTOnews.com November 22, Microsoft officially released DirectStorage 1.1 earlier this month, which can greatly improve the loading time of PC games. The new version also brings improvements in many ways, including moving some of the game decompression tasks from CPU to GPU, reducing the burden on CPU and speeding up the game experience.

CTOnews.com learned that DirectStorage 1.1 did not adjust the hardware requirements introduced by DirectStorage 1.0: the need for a fast NVMe disk and a GPU that supports DirectX 12 and Shader Model 6.0.

After Microsoft released DirectStorage 1.1, AMD, Intel and Nvidia have quickly followed suit, and these optimizations are also known as metacommands. Intel released a new driver for its ARC GPU series this week, introducing "optimized Microsoft DirectStorage*1.1" and supporting "GPU accelerated decompression" for developer integration tools.

AMD has not yet released a public driver with metacommands, but the company has provided partners with a "graphics driver version that supports metacommands". Nvidia released the driver 526.98, which officially supports DirectStorage 1.1.

In addition to Intel, AMD and Nvidia follow-up, another important aspect is the game manufacturers. Although DirectStorage is already supported on Win11 systems and graphics cards, it doesn't make sense if no game implements the API. At this stage, no game supports DirectStorage 1.1.

One of the first games to announce support for DirectStorage is Forspoken, which will be released on January 24, 2023. The other game is Wizards 3: Wild Hunt (The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt), which CD Project Red plans to release on December 14, 2022.
