CTOnews.com, November 21 (Xinhua) according to the latest data from market research firm DIGITIMES Research, global tablet shipments reached 38.4 million in the third quarter of 2022, an increase of more than 20% month-on-month and slightly better than originally expected, mainly driven by an increase in orders from Apple.

In the third quarter, the top five tablet brands in the world were Apple, Samsung, Amazon, Lenovo and Huawei, which together contributed about 80% of global shipments. The new iPad will push Apple's shipments up further in the fourth quarter, up 7 per cent from a month earlier, with Apple's market share rising to 38.2 per cent and Samsung's market share of about 22 per cent. Apple and Samsung Electronics together contributed about 60 per cent of sales in the quarter.

In terms of size, the combined share of shipments of tablets 10.x inches and above rose from 80.6% in the second quarter to 84.4% in the third quarter. The 10.x-inch segment alone accounted for 57.7% of all tablet sales this quarter.

As most of the newly released tablets and models still under development are equipped with 10.95-inch or 11.x-inch displays, the share of shipments of tablets with 10.x inches and above is expected to rise to more than 90% in the near future, driving large-size displays to become the mainstream specification for future tablets.

Thanks to the increase in iPad shipments, Taiwan ODM manufacturers will account for 38.9% of the world's shipments in the third quarter and further increase in the fourth quarter.

CTOnews.com learned that despite positive factors such as the release of the new iPad 10 and iPad Pro and promotions by brands, DIGITIMES expects global tablet shipments to fall 9 per cent month-on-quarter in the fourth quarter due to shrinking terminal demand due to inflation, higher interest rates in mature markets and weakness in the global economy.
