On November 21, Chinese electric car manufacturers are targeting European drivers and large corporate customers, hoping to use "five-star" models to win their favor. These cars are not only cheaper, but also have the highest safety rating and many high-tech features.

In the past few months, several Chinese electric vehicles have received a five-star rating from the European New vehicle Evaluation Program (NCAP). To achieve this rating, vehicles need to be equipped with active and passive safety functions that far exceed the basic requirements of the law.

Gu Hongdi, president of Chinese electric carmaker Xiaopeng, said: "all Chinese electric car manufacturers want to obtain an European NCAP five-star rating to be more competitive in the European market."

Gu Hongdi added that in the past three years, Xiaopeng has been setting up stores and service centers in Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden, where the electric P7 sedan and the G9 SUV will be officially launched next year.

Matthew Avery, director of the UK Automotive Research Centre Thatcham Research and a board member of NCAP, which is funded by insurance companies, said Chinese electric carmakers had recognised that safety played an extremely important role in the sales process.

The NCAP five-star rating is seen as the key to allaying European concerns about the quality of Chinese-made cars, where severe crash tests failed in 2006 and 2007 gave the impression that Chinese cars were not safe.

Perhaps more important for sales, high safety ratings have also opened up a potentially huge corporate fleet market for Chinese electric carmakers. Corporate fleet sales account for about half of total car sales in major markets, including Germany, France and the UK, while many corporate buyers put safety first.

"the sales of corporate fleets are very important and many companies emphasize five-star ratings when buying cars," Avery said. "
