The new plan includes major changes to League of Legends's EMEA Champions League (LEC), as well as the merger of the European Division, Turkey Division, CIS Division, Middle East and Africa Division (MENA) into EMEA Division.

CTOnews.com learned that EMEA Division League of Legends e-sports Competition Director Maximilian Peter Schmidt said that these changes will provide more opportunities for professionals and aspiring athletes in the EMEA Division, and give them more ways to participate in elite level events in the EMEA Division.

In addition, Naz Aletaha, global head of League of Legends and e-sports events, pointed out that the situation in the EMEA division has been changing over the past decade. "from the transformation from EU LCS to LEC and the establishment of the most powerful development ecosystem in the entire e-sports movement, we have expanded our business scope in this division."

Important changes to LEC and the wider ecosystem in 2023 include:

LEC

LEC will change its name to League of Legends EMEA Champions League and make changes to the season, including changes to the match system and the introduction of the LEC season Finals.

The competition will be divided into three seasons: winter, spring and summer. The winter and spring games will be held before the mid-season championship, while the summer and LEC season finals will be held after the mid-season championship and before the start of League of Legends's global finals.

Every season, the BO1 round robin will be held first, and then the group stage will be held. The eight teams that won before will play the knockout stage of BO3 double defeat, and finally the four teams that win will play the playoffs of the knockout round of BO5 double defeat.

The season will reach the best part of the LEC season Finals, and the six strongest teams of the season (the season champions will automatically qualify) will compete for the global finals. The LEC season Finals will also hold a roadshow on the last weekend of the competition.

EMEA ecosystem and ERL

The European Division will be merged with the Turkey Division, the CIS Division and the MENA Division (Middle East and North Africa Division) into the EMEA Division.

The unification of the division will bring TCL (Turkish Champions League) and AL (Arab League, formerly known as Intel Arab Cup) into the newly renamed ERL (EMEA Division League).

EU Masters will be transformed into EMEA Masters (EM) and become a real pan-tournament.

These changes mean that all players with resident status in the European Division, the Turkish Division, the CIS Division and the MENA Division are free to participate in LEC competitions and are not subject to cross-district transfer policies.

LCL (CIS Division) will remain suspended. The fist game will continue to observe the situation in the arena and assess the feasibility of integrating the league into the expanded ERL ecosystem at a later date.
