CTOnews.com, Nov. 20 (Xinhua)-- on Friday, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) decided to grant Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, permission to participate in its self-driving pilot program, which allows self-driving car companies to carry specific public rides while driverless and operate 24 hours a day.

According to CPUC, Waymo self-driving cars can reach speeds of up to 65 mph, and although self-driving models are difficult to operate in bad weather conditions, Waymo says it is trying to solve the problem by collecting data about different conditions and using it to notify its self-driving system.

It is worth mentioning that Waymo is the second self-driving company to join the California self-driving pilot program, while GM-backed Cruise was approved by CPUC and DMV of California last year, followed by the launch of its self-driving taxi service in San Francisco in June.

Unlike self-driving ride-hailing services available to all in Chandler, Arizona and Phoenix, the San Francisco pilot service will be aimed at "trusted testers" rather than the general public.

Waymo has been approved to pick up passengers in San Francisco, Los Altos, Los Altos Mountains, Mountain View, Palo Alto and Sunnyvale. Waymo said it would open driverless cars to the public "in the coming weeks".

In addition, Waymo announced that it would soon be deployed in Los Angeles (where it has been testing), and they showed off their new robotic taxi model, the Robotaxi built by Polar Krypton and Waymo, which Polar Krypton calls the M-Vision concept car, the first self-driving car of Polar Krypton.

CTOnews.com learned that M-Vison is based on the SEA-M platform and will be ready for mass production by 2024. This is a model customized by Polar Krypton for the Waymo One self-driving fleet and will be put into commercial operation in the United States.
