On November 19th, Elon Musk, Twitter's new boss, issued an ultimatum that led to the departure of hundreds of employees, but he didn't seem worried. "the best people will stay," Musk tweeted on Friday.

On the same day, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy (Dave Portnoy) tweeted: "what do people mean when they say Twitter is going to shut down? doesn't Twitter run automatically? I don't know anything. Hey, Musk wants to play on Twitter with me? I don't understand."

Musk replied: "the best people will stay, so I'm not particularly worried." Twitter didn't respond to a request for comment.

On Wednesday, local time, Musk issued an ultimatum to Twitter employees, asking them to make a decision by 5pm on Thursday, either to sign a guarantee to help him create "Twitter 2.0" or to resign with a three-month salary.

Some internal estimates suggest that at least 1200 full-time employees resigned on Thursday, according to three people familiar with the matter. As of the end of October, Twitter had 7500 full-time employees, down to about 3700 after massive layoffs this month.

Perhaps the most critical question now is how Twitter can stay in business after massive layoffs in such a short period of time. The impact of layoffs and voluntary resignations has spread to Twitter's technical team, according to people familiar with the matter. Although Twitter is still operating, former employees say the company may be more difficult to solve when serious problems arise.

Keeping sites like Twitter online usually requires the full support of senior engineers, who must constantly guard against cyber attacks and monitor network traffic to make sure the server is not overloaded. But problems can arise if too many veteran employees leave and Twitter doesn't have enough professionals to monitor or resolve the problem quickly.

Musk and other company leaders even called employees who were considered critical to Twitter's future to persuade them to stay at the company. However, those asked to stay did not ask for a raise, but asked Mr Musk to clarify his "vision" for Twitter.

On Thursday night, a senior Twitter software engineer who resigned posted that the company shared a message with employees that the leadership had no vision and that they were expected to maintain "blind loyalty" to Musk.

Musk then posted a series of memes on Twitter, joking that Twitter employees left the company on Thursday night. One of the tweets included a picture of Twitter logo printed on the grave. Another post was a picture that read, "help us, Ligma and Johnson, you are our only hope."

The second post refers to pranksters named Rahul Ligma (Rahul Ligma) and Daniel Johnson (Daniel Johnson). When Musk took over Twitter, they pretended to be fired by Twitter. Musk later took a group photo with the two men and jokingly welcomed them back to the company.
