CTOnews.com, November 19 (Xinhua)-- in 2020, Apple announced the transition of Mac processors from Intel to self-developed Apple Silicon, and several Mac devices have been equipped with M-series chips. However, during the transition period, Apple launched a simulation solution called "Rosetta 2" to enable applications to run on M-series chips.

Australian security researcher Doug Johnson (Dougall Johnson) recently discovered an undisclosed extension after digging into "Rosetta 2" that simplifies the process of storing parity and adjusting flags in applications. He says this can make the simulation more accurate and fast.

What is even more surprising about this extension is that it originated from the second processor released by Intel, the 8080 processor released by Intel in 1974.

CTOnews.com learned that this ancient 8-bit microprocessor handled these adjustments and parity storage very specifically, and this feature has always existed in today's Intel processors. Even the latest Core i9-13900K is directly related to the processors that powered some computers nearly 50 years ago.

Bits 26 and 27 in ARM's flag register are dedicated to this process, except that these two bits are assigned to this action only when Rosetta 2 is activated.

Rosetta 2 is not activated by default unless it detects that a program is based on Intel's Mac, reallocates the two bits, and allows Rosetta 2 to work at its usual fast pace.
