On some 2021-2023 Model X vehicles, constraint control module (RCM) calibration may cause front passenger airbags to unfold unexpectedly in some low-speed collisions. When a 3-year-old or 6-year-old front seat passenger is not wearing a seat belt or is in the wrong position, this may result in a violation of sections 21.4 and 23.4 of FMVSS 208s.

According to the recall notice, Tesla started pushing wireless software updates earlier this week to solve the problem:

In low-speed crashes in which a 3-or 6-year-old front passenger is not wearing a seat belt and is incorrectly positioned, a remedial OTA firmware update ensures that the front passenger airbag complies with sections 21.4 and 23.4 of FMVSS 208, while the release of the firmware without remedial action does not ensure compliance.

According to reports, as of November 8, 2022, Tesla has not found any warranty claims, on-site reports, collisions, injuries or deaths related to this situation.

Due to the arrival of New Energy Intelligent Network connected cars, most models can solve the problems encountered by vehicles through OTA updates, without having to go to after-sales 4S stores for maintenance and upgrades, but NHTSA requires Tesla to issue a "recall" notice when using OTA software updates to solve problems that should have been resolved through recall, so the term "recall" may be misleading to users.

In September, Elon Musk, chief executive of Tesla, even pointed this out, calling the term "outdated and inaccurate", CTOnews.com reported.
