Beijing, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) A California judge sentenced Elizabeth Holmes (Elizabeth Holmes), founder of blood testing company Theranos, to 11 years and 3 months in prison on Friday on charges of using Theranos to defraud investors. Theranos, which was valued at as much as $9 billion, has gone bankrupt.
Homs (middle) US judge Edward Davila of San Jose, California, imposed the sentence on three counts of investor fraud and one count of conspiracy, which is closer to the requirements of US prosecutors. Earlier, U. S. prosecutors asked the judge to sentence Holmes to 15 years in prison, while Holmes's lawyer wanted the judge to be sentenced to house arrest or up to 18 months in prison.
In January, after a three-month trial, a jury found Holmes, 38, guilty, including four counts. She is accused of deceiving investors into believing that hundreds of tests can be completed with just a few drops of blood from her fingers between 2010 and 2015, leading to the diagnosis of serious diseases such as cancer and diabetes.
Holmes, who was clearly pregnant in a dark coat and black skirt, hugged her parents and her companions after the verdict. She cried at the hearing, saying she was "destroyed" by failure. If she had the chance, she would do a lot of things in different ways.
"I have failed people, and I am ashamed of what they have been through." She said.
Before the verdict, Judge Davila said the case was "disturbing on many levels" and questioned what prompted Holmes, a "prominent" entrepreneur, to distort her company to investors. "this is a fraud case in which an exciting business is moved forward with great expectations but shattered by lies, misstatements, apparent arrogance and lies." Davila said.
The verdict put an end to a story of fraud that lasted for years. The story once attracted Silicon Valley, spawning books, television documentaries, podcasts and movies about Holmes, a Stanford dropout. She later became a celebrity entrepreneur, but watched her company go bankrupt because of technological failure.
