The misunderstanding of many beginners is to use a dimmer to expose for 30 seconds or even 1 minute, they feel very professional, or the picture is very textured. In fact, the shutter speed of slow-door photography is very fastidious, and it is by no means the slower the better.

Generally speaking, there are three kinds of situations for shooting running water.

1. Slow-moving lakes and rivers hope to atomize the wire and calm the water surface.

2, fast stream, waterfall, hope to reflect the filamentous texture.

3, fast-splashing sea spray, or fast-flowing waterfall, hope to retain the morphological details of the water, but also reflect the dynamic feeling.

In these three cases, the suitable shutter speed is different.

Slow-moving lakes and rivers

This is a comparison before and after the use of a dimmer. In this messy flow of waves, we are used to long exposure with a slow shutter to calm the water surface.

Guangzhou Liade Bridge, the front of the river is slow, in this slow water scene, need to use 10-speed light reducer exposure for 30 seconds, in order to make the water surface wiredrawing, appears smooth.

In Chile's Bainai National Park, this picture shows not only the calmness of the water, but also silk clouds, so an ultra-long exposure is used. In the same position as the image above, the water surface on this day is wavy, so even if the exposure is 30 seconds long, it will not be as smooth as when there is no wind, and when it is windy, the plants in the foreground need to be photographed with a high-speed shutter for later synthesis.

Therefore, for slow-moving lakes and rivers, we want to atomize the wire drawing and calm the water surface. We usually choose a 10-speed light reducer with an exposure of 20 seconds to 1 minute, but do not expose for too long, which will heat up the photosensors and increase the thermal noise of the picture.

Second, fast-flowing streams and waterfalls

This is the Icelandic waterfall, the flow rate is fast, I want to reflect the shape of the waterfall water column, so use 6 dimmers, exposure 1.6 seconds, because the current is fast, 1.6 seconds can pull the water, and will not let the people in front of you lose.

This is the waterfall photographed from the outside, using the stream as the foreground. I want to reflect the flowing texture of the stream, which is the bubble spray formed by the impact of the stream on the stone. So the shutter speed is set at about 3 seconds, which can pull the spray. If the shutter speed is too slow, it will form atomization, and there will be no such filamentous shape.

Selyalam Falls in Iceland, the water flow is very large, if exposed for a long time, the whole picture will become a mass of water fog, losing the form of water flow, so the shutter speed can be controlled at about 2 seconds, you can get the wire drawing effect without turning the picture into a mess.

Therefore, for fast flow streams, waterfalls, want to reflect the filamentous shape, do not want to atomize, shutter speed is generally between 2 to 5 seconds, 6 dimmers are commonly used.

Third, fast splashing spray

This is a waterfall filmed in Guizhou. A large area of the waterfall is pouring down. I hope to retain the level of the waterfall, so the shutter speed is chosen as 1 to 8 seconds, which can not only show a sense of motion to a certain extent, but also not atomize the water, and retain the level of the waterfall.

In this scene shot by Gannan, the texture of the water flowing from the cracks in the rock is very attractive, so it is necessary to retain the trace of the water flowing through the stone, as well as the appearance of splashing rapidly. at this time, the shutter speed is 1 minute and 2 seconds. avoid atomizing the fast water and losing details.

Wenzhou sea view, the most important feature of sea view is the state of spray splashing on the reef. Sea view shooting taboo to use 30 seconds to atomize the sea, that will lose the characteristics of the sea view. Generally catch high-speed splash, to 0.2 to 1 second speed, and very demanding, 0.3 seconds difference will have a different effect. So we usually use the fourth or sixth gear of the dimmer.

Therefore, when we want to grasp the detail and level of water, but also reflect the dynamic feeling, usually use the shutter speed of less than 1 second, 6-speed dimmer is relatively commonly used.
