Foreign media reported that Volkswagen developed hydrogen fuel cell cars from a patent jointly applied for by Volkswagen and the German company Kraftwerk Tubes.

Patents filed by the two companies in July 2021 and recently released show that they are jointly developing new hydrogen fuel cells. the patents cover the development of hydrogen fuel cell packs and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles with a range of 1243 miles, or 2000 kilometers, which is much higher than the range of currently charged pure electric vehicles.

In addition to the mileage advantages, the hydrogen fuel cell jointly developed by Volkswagen and Kraftwerk Tubes also has cost advantages.

According to foreign media reports, the key technology of hydrogen fuel cell jointly developed by Volkswagen and Kraftwerk Tubes is ceramic membrane, which is cheaper than the polymer membrane used by Toyota and Hyundai, and is considered to be the key to mass production and application of hydrogen fuel cell in automobile in the future.

In addition, ceramic membranes do not need platinum, an expensive metal, during operation, and platinum has been proved to be one of the cost pressures for large-scale production of hydrogen fuel cells.

Although it has been developed in partnership with Volkswagen and patented, Kraftwerk Tubes's CEO has confirmed that their battery pack will not be exclusive to Volkswagen, and that their goal is to apply the relevant technology to a range of production cars by 2026, which they expect to be completed by a number of automakers.

Mercedes-Benz hydrogen fuel cell concept truck GenH2 is worth noting that in addition to Volkswagen, another German automaker Mercedes-Benz is also developing hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. In 2020 (at that time, it was still Daimler), Mercedes-Benz launched the hydrogen fuel cell concept truck, Mercedes-Benz GenH2, with a range of 1000 kilometers or more and a maximum load of 25 tons. It is planned to be tested by customers in 2023 and mass production will begin after 2025.
