CTOnews.com, November 18, Canalys analysts believe that Arm architecture SoC is making rapid progress. In four years' time, Arm architecture will occupy more than half of the cloud server market share and 30% of the PC market share.

According to DigiTimes, Steve Brazier, president and CEO of market research company Canalys, said at an event: "by 2026, half of the cloud processors will be ARM,30%-based PC will be ARM-based. This is an extraordinary event and an industry-changing event, but it has not received enough attention."

According to IDC, Apple now sells almost 100% of its PC based on M-series SoC, with Apple accounting for 13.5% of the PC market in the third quarter of 2022. In addition, a large number of Chromebook are also based on Arm SoC, and it can be said that the Arm architecture has accounted for at least 15% of the PC market in the third quarter of 2022.

Canalys believes that Arm has the potential for further growth in PC, especially if other leading PC vendors such as Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Lenovo, Acer and Asustek come up with their own Arm-based SoC. However, he did not mention Qualcomm, which is clearly an important player, especially in the notebook field.

Hewlett-Packard, Dell or Lenovo may be less likely to develop their own Arm-based SoC for their PC. Chips are now expensive to develop, and because these companies sell a large number of PC with completely different configurations, they will need several different SoC to deal with all markets. Given the relatively low profit margins in the PC market, these companies are unlikely to try to replace AMD or Intel processors with their processors, and they may order custom versions of chips from leading CPU designers.

CTOnews.com learned that servers are another area that the Arm architecture has recently entered. According to Omdia, Arm SoC controlled about 7.1% of the server market in the second quarter of 2022. However, not everyone needs an Arm-based server. Companies that use tens of thousands of servers are less likely to adopt Arm because they are running applications developed for X86, and the advantages of Arm over them are not obvious. As a result, Brazier believes that cloud servers will be the first major market for Arm-based SoC. He believes that the advantage of Arm in this market is so obvious that the Arm architecture will be used by 50% of cloud servers SoC in four years' time.
