On Wednesday, local time, Musk asked employees to formally declare whether they are willing to continue to work for Twitter, and the document also includes a commitment to "intense overtime work." Employees must fill out a form by 5 p.m. EDT on Thursday.

The table contains only one option: "agree." Employees who do not accept the request before the deadline can only take severance pay equivalent to three months' salary and leave the company.

As the deadline approached, Twitter began inviting key staff to meetings to inform them about the future of Twitter, according to people familiar with the matter. Musk also specifically found a number of managers, including a member of the Twitter trust and security team, and entrusted them to persuade employees to stay.

Mr Musk issued the ultimatum less than two weeks after he laid off about 50 per cent of Twitter, or about 3700 people. Many Twitter employees are consulting lawyers this week to find out what to do next. The form contains few details of severance pay, and it is unclear whether employees will be legally protected to continue to receive stock awards or insurance.
