CTOnews.com, Nov. 17 (Xinhua)-- despite a sharp drop in total smartphone shipments in Southeast Asia in the third quarter of 2022, Apple iPhone shipments rose 63 percent year-on-year, according to a new study.

In 2019, Apple saw competition from smartphones in Southeast Asia, almost all of which were much cheaper than the iPhone. Now, as economic pressure increases, the smartphone market fell by 10% in the third quarter of 2022, while apple continues to rise sharply.

Economic uncertainty across Southeast Asia is responsible for lower-than-expected sales, according to Counterpoint Research. The decline is mainly reflected in phones priced at $200 (1416 yuan) or less, but high-end models that cost $400 (2832 yuan) or more do better.

Shipments of low-end smartphones in Southeast Asia fell 24% year-on-year, while high-end models rose 29% over the same period, CTOnews.com learned.

"there were some brand-level blows and mistakes in the third quarter of 2022," Counterpoint Research wrote. "while Samsung's shipments fell 13 per cent year-on-year, Apple's shipments in all major countries increased 63 per cent year-on-year."

Counterpoint points out that Vietnam seems to be "able to snap up iPhone faster than its neighbors". Buyers in Thailand and the Philippines are reported to have been attracted to 5G, but the lack of 5G coverage means demand in Vietnam and Indonesia is weak.

The research firm expects lower-than-forecast sales to mean manufacturers will build up their inventory of older smartphones. Counterpoint said it would like to see manufacturers introduce incentives, such as more trade-in incentives.
