There are three types of shutters: mechanical shutter, electronic front curtain and electronic shutter (mute shutter).

The mechanical shutter consists of a front curtain and a rear curtain. The front curtain opens and the rear curtain closes. Since the front curtain movement occurs at the beginning of the exposure, the vibration caused by the shutter curtain may affect the clarity of the photo.

In addition, when shooting with LCD / electronic viewfinder (such as micro-SLR and SLR real-time viewfinder mode), the shutter curtain is open, so the process of shooting with mechanical shutter is: scene-> front curtain closes-> front curtain opens-> exposure-> rear curtain closes-> rear curtain opens-> scene. The closing and opening of the front curtain will not only increase the vibration but also prolong the shutter delay.

The electronic front curtain is in the form of progressive scanning instead of the mechanical front curtain, eliminating the mechanical shock caused by the shutter curtain (the back curtain action occurs at the end and will not affect the imaging). Viewfinder-> (Electronic Front Curtain Action->) exposure-> Rear Curtain closed-> Rear Curtain Open-> viewfinder, it gives us the impression that we have directly changed from viewfinder to exposure.

However, the electronic front curtain will have the problem of cutting the spot when it has a large aperture and high-speed shutter (the upper and lower exposure of the picture becomes uneven). Nikon and Fuji limit the electronic front curtain shutter to a maximum of 1max 2000 seconds. Strictly speaking, when more than 1pm 500 seconds, you should pay attention to the impact of the electronic front curtain.

At present, we do not see which camera will affect the number of RAW digits when using the electronic front curtain shutter, and the default electronic front curtain shutter does not affect the picture quality.

The electronic shutter is completed by progressive scanning of both the front curtain and the rear curtain. Because there is no mechanical shutter action, so the shooting can be completely muted, and there will be no trouble of cutting the spot.

But for most cameras, when shooting moving objects with an electronic shutter, there will be distortion due to the shutter shutter / jelly effect, such as buildings, lamp poles tilted and golf clubs bent.

Finally, Sony and Canon cameras may reduce the number of RAW digits when using electronic shutters, which may affect the picture quality; Nikon cameras may use electronic shutters to slow down the continuous shooting speed.
