CTOnews.com, November 17 (Xinhua) at the Snapdragon Summit in 2022, Niantic today unveiled the latest version of its AR head display reference design, which is based on Qualcomm's newly released Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 platform. Niantic, which was spun off from Google in 2015, is known for launching the Pok é mon Go game.

The reference design has a thin transparent display, while other computing hardware seems to be placed in a module behind the head.

The first prototype of the Niantic (pictured below) carries the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1, which is connected to the phone and battery through a power cord, with two very obvious cameras.

Niantic's latest reference design with Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 also has cameras on both sides, but the cameras are more hidden. Niantic said it identified five key requirements from user feedback, starting with comfort. The company's goal is to "be able to wear and play games for a long time", that is, a battery life of 1-2 hours and weighing less than 250g. Other requirements are wireless design, portability, compactness and strong performance.

Qualcomm describes Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 as its first chip designed specifically for AR, and previous generations of products have mainly provided chips that support augmented reality and virtual reality use cases. Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 adopts "multi-chip distributed processing architecture", which is composed of AR processor, AR coprocessor and connection system, which are not on the same circuit board, but on the two side poles or even bridges of the glasses. Officials say the platform provides groundbreaking AR technology that will help create a new generation of powerful lightweight AR smart glasses. From the beginning of its design, the new Snapdragon AR2 platform aims to change the shape design of head-worn glasses and create a new era of spatial computing experience with the integration of the real world and meta-universe.

Niantic also shared real-life footage taken through the lens of its prototype device, including games, guided navigation and a demonstration of overlaying business information (coffee shops) on real-life maps.

CTOnews.com learned that in addition to Niantic, Qualcomm said Lenovo, LG, Nreal, OPPO, Pico, QONOQ, Rokid, Sharp, TCL, Tencent, Vuzix and Xiaomi were all developing devices based on Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1. Meanwhile, Microsoft has been working with Qualcomm on AR2 Gen 1 for some time.
