On Tuesday, an executive at Twitter warned employees to use internal communication tools such as Slack channels "wisely" because Elon Musk, the company's new boss, has been using messages in these channels to find and fire employees who criticize him.
Alan Rosa, who joined Twitter in January as global head of IT and information security, told engineering staff via Slack late Tuesday that they needed to be clear that everything they said via internal instant chat and email was not private.
Musk recently combed through Slack chats and employee profiles to find and fire employees critical of his or the company's decisions. The firings continued Wednesday, with at least 10 employees fired for allegedly violating "conduct" rules, people familiar with the matter said.
Remember, on the corporate platform, we want to have what we call 'zero privacy expectations', and anything we post in Slack, Jira or email immediately becomes corporate property,"Losa said. "The Company may search for content on these platforms for any reasonable purpose. So while it's true that we should use these communication tools to maximize productivity, we should keep in mind that what we communicate can reappear at any given time for a variety of reasons. "
He added: "Use these tools as expected and use them wisely. "
An employee said Losa's message was interpreted by them as a "warning." A former employee said the losa message made it clear that employees "don't badmouth the boss." A former employee previously complained that Musk, who took over the company, was arbitrary.
Just hours after Losa issued the warning, Musk sent another email to Twitter employees overnight. In his emails, he repeatedly asks employees to embrace a new "extreme hard core" work culture. Musk first proposed creating a "hard core" culture at a plenary meeting last week, when he warned that Twitter might go bankrupt in the future.
In a recent email to Twitter employees, Musk asked all employees who stayed to make a decision by 5 p.m. Thursday to either stay at the company and accept "long, intense" jobs or take severance pay. Musk said employees who want to stay must fill out an online form confirming that they "want to be part of the new Twitter." Any employee who doesn't sign up by the deadline will be classified as leaving and will receive a three-month severance package, he added.
Dozens of Twitter employees have resigned since last week, but without compensation of any kind. One employee called Musk's new email "absolutely crazy." Another person who resigned voluntarily on Tuesday was frustrated by the timing of his resignation. "I want to scream," the employee said.
Musk is in his third week at Twitter. Even though many of the teams working on key tasks on the platform are already understaffed due to layoffs, Musk is reportedly demanding to keep working and trying to keep the Twitter platform running properly. Twitter's engineering team and others are still trying to rehire fired colleagues because Musk's mass layoffs have hurt.
