CTOnews.com, Nov. 17, yesterday, Qualcomm unveiled its new product Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, its top application processor (AP), at the Snapdragon Summit in 2022. Today, the San Diego-based chip design company unveiled the Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 platform to provide an augmented reality (AR) experience for smart glasses and other head-wearing devices.

The new chip is part of Qualcomm's extended reality (XR) product. Qualcomm said Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 "provides groundbreaking AR technology that will unlock a new generation of stylish and powerful glasses. The company built Snapdragon AR2 from scratch to revolutionize the shape of headwear glasses and usher in a new era of spatial computing experience for real-world / virtual-world combinations."

Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1's main processor footprint has been reduced by 40 per cent, while still increasing AR performance by 2.5 times and reducing power consumption by 50 per cent. As Qualcomm said: "this makes AR glasses comfortable to wear for a long time and meets the needs of consumer and business use cases."

Through the platform, delay-sensitive data, such as video streams, surgeries, multiplayer video games and computerized stock trading, will be sent directly to the head display. Other more complex data requirements will be offloaded to smartphones with Snapdragon processors, PC or other types of compatible host devices.

The AR processor is designed for head display with multiple cameras and supports up to nine concurrent cameras. The platform consists of a multi-chip architecture, including an AR processor, an AR coprocessor, and a connection platform.

"We have built Snapdragon AR2 to meet the unique challenges of headset AR and provide industry-leading processing, artificial intelligence and connectivity in a stylish form factor," said Hugo Swart, vice president of product management at XR, Qualcomm Technology. As the technical and physical requirements of VR / MR and AR diverge, Snapdragon AR2 represents another platform in our XR portfolio that defines a meta-universe, helping our OEM partners revolutionize AR glasses. "

The AR coprocessor will handle important tasks such as eye tracking and can also use iris authentication, which can not only verify the identity, but also render certain images only when the user looks at a part of the display, which can save power consumption.

The system also features a FastConnect 7800 mobile connection system and supports Wi-Fi 7, which will reduce the latency between AR glasses and host devices, including smartphones, to less than 2 milliseconds (ms).

The Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 is manufactured in a 4-nanometer process (Qualcomm did not disclose which contract factory produces the chip). Manufacturers interested in the platform "include Lenovo, LG, Nreal, OPPO, Pico, QONOQ, Rokid, Sharp, TCL, Vuzix and Xiaomi".

Rul é n Caballero, vice president of Microsoft mixed reality, Terminal and Technology, said, "Microsoft has worked closely with Qualcomm on Snapdragon AR2 platform requirements to help identify specialized underlying technologies that unlock new possibilities for the AR experience. The innovation of the Snapdragon AR2 platform will revolutionize headset AR terminals, thereby changing immersive productivity and collaboration, and we look forward to seeing the innovation Qualcomm and its partners will bring to the market.
