CTOnews.com, November 16 (Xinhua) British telephone companies will have to find ways to identify and stop fraudulent calls, according to Ofcom, the UK communications regulator. The new rules will protect people from frauds who use fake phone numbers. Ofcom said 75 per cent had received suspicious phone calls and text messages in the past three months.

Under the new rules, Ofcom Ofcom will require all telephone networks to identify and block fraudulent calls where technically feasible. CTOnews.com has learned that phone companies should ensure that numbers are in the UK's 10-or 11-digit format, that they should block "whitelist" calls from Ofcom, and that caller ID calls from abroad that deceive the UK should also be blocked.

TalkTalk has voluntarily implemented the new rules, saying it has observed a 65 per cent reduction in the number of customer complaints about fraudulent phone calls. Other phone companies that do not comply with the regulations will have six months to make the necessary changes, and these rules will be implemented from May 2023. Unfortunately, Ofcom has yet to provide details on fines imposed on companies that fail to implement the new guidelines.
