CTOnews.com, November 16 (Xinhua) recently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has approved China Unicom to re-use the frequency resources of the 904-915swap 949-960MHz band (900MHz band) currently used in 2G / 3G / 4G systems for 5G systems.

900MHz band has the characteristics of low propagation loss, wide coverage, strong penetration and low cost of network deployment, so it is not only the globally recognized "golden" band of public mobile communication, but also the main frequency band used in the early 2G public mobile communication system.

According to a person in charge of China Unicom, by the end of this year, China Unicom's 900MHz low-frequency network will build 170000 stations in rural areas, which can quickly improve the level of 5G coverage in rural areas and help digital rural construction.

China Unicom uses the 900MHz band to carry out 5G business, which can give full play to the technical advantages of 900MHz in low-frequency voice network, Internet of things and data network, and further improve deep coverage of urban building shielded areas, help China Unicom to rapidly promote 5G coverage in rural and remote areas with less investment, help consumers in rural and remote areas to better enjoy high-quality 5G services and expand low-frequency 5G industrial space.

China Unicom network technology experts further pointed out that in townships and rural areas, population density is relatively low and regional coverage is relatively wide, and the goal of wide coverage can be achieved by using 900MHz band to build 5G network with dense buildings in urban areas, while 5G network expandable network coverage level by using 900MHz band to improve the network experience of some users in weak coverage and no coverage scenarios.

CTOnews.com learned that by the end of September, the total number of mobile communication base stations in China had reached 10.72 million, of which the total number of 5G base stations reached 2.22 million, accounting for 20.7% of the total mobile base stations; the total number of mobile phone users of the three basic telecommunications enterprises reached 1.682 billion, of which 5G mobile phone users reached 510 million, accounting for 30.3% of mobile phone users.
